S1816 Series – Continuous Monitoring Particle Counter
The S1816 Series continuous monitoring particle counter has been designed from the ground up to meet the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. Housed in an IP65 sealed stainless steel enclosure, the instrument is ideal for use in clean rooms and within equipment such as isolators or filling machines. Quick release connectors for vacuum and power/communications allow the unit to be quickly removed for service or calibration. The particle counter sensor itself features a 10-year MTBF laser diode and has integral flow measurement to ensure that you get reliable counts or a clear indication of flow failure if a cap is left on following sanitisation. The S1816 series supports both Ethernet (Modbus TCP) and RS485 serial (Modbus RTU) communications.
The S1816VS uses Modbus RTU serial RS485 protocol using standard CAT5 cabling and accessories, with spare cores used to carry power to the counter. These units do not require to be re-programmed with an address when being swapped because the address is provided by the control assembly located outside of the clean room. This allows the particle counter to be changed by clean room staff, ensuring that production continues with the absolute minimum down time.
The S1816VE model uses Modbus TCP protocol over CAT5 Ethernet cable with the power supplied through spare cores. This model is not directly swappable as it requires to be programmed with a unique IP address per location. This model requires the PA4500E-xxxx Control Assembly.
The PA4500S-xxxx Control Assembly houses a power supply, control electronics and vacuum pumps and can greatly simplify on-site installation. A single Ethernet cable runs from the PC to the Control Assembly that provides control and power for up to four particle counters. Between one and four vacuum pumps can be mounted on the base of the Control Assembly, which provides the address mapping for up to four S1816VS particle counters. The application requirements determine which pumps will be used. Smaller pumps will be installed for applications that require individual particle counter control and medium to larger pumps for groups of particle counters which are controlled together.

Portable Particle Counters

SmartSocket
The SK1809 SmartSocket offers an easy method of collecting data from portable particle counters without the need to set up a sample location within the counter. This is achieved by permanently setting the location address within the wall mounted SmartSocket rather than manually within the counter every time it visits a new sampling location. Optimised for use with enVigil application software, the particle counts are automatically reported from the correct location as the particle counter is plugged in at a specific sample location.
The compact unit offers local indication of out-of-compliance results via simple red and green lamps and can be enhanced by the addition of a wall or ceiling mounted beacon stack. A sealed button on the front allows the particle counter to be started and stopped without having to leave the clean room.
Multiple SmartSockets can be connected to allow a single portable particle counter to cover a large area with no risk of the incorrect sample location being recorded. This is particularly useful where the classification of the area does not mandate continuous particle counting.
The SmartSocket system can even accommodate multiple particle counters to facilitate simultaneous sampling of multiple locations, if required.
Note that the connection on the faceplate only provides serial communications with the portable particle counter. It does not provide power, therefore the particle counter must be battery powered or powered separately.

The DK1809 Data Transfer Socket offers an error free method of collecting data from a portable particle counter that has to visit multiple sampling locations within a facility. This is commonly referred to as a ‘tour’ and may involve sampling from many locations. To achieve this, each physical location is allocated a fixed number and the location number changed within the counter at each sample location. The portable counter is started manually on the portable counter at each location and the appropriate numbers of samples taken.
When the tour is complete, the portable counter is taken to the data transfer socket, connected via a cable and the integral start button pressed until the transfer begins.
The complete set of samples is transferred to the host computer and is automatically split according to the sample location embedded within the particle counter’s sample data.
Data transfer activity is indicated on a bright green LED, while another red LED shows any errors that may have occurred during the transfer.
